The Value of Sense of Humour
"There ain't much fun in medicine, but there's a heck of a lot of medicine in fun"
- Josh Billings
Sense of humour is the ability of a person to find the lighter or the funnier part of any talk, and make people laugh. Humour and laughter could be the simplest and surest way to reduce stress and improve our physical and mental health. Sense of humour is an art where one can turn the monotonous and boring on-goings to enjoyable direction which may be more productive.
All of us know, laughter could really be the best medicine. Norman Cousin in his book "Anatomy of an Illness" has reported the value of humour in enabling his recovery from a rare disease of connective tissue. According to the physicians his condition was incurable and possibly fatal, but he found involvement in laughter, the best therapy to be followed for his painful disease and ultimately he got better heath in a few months.
Sense of humour aids a bit extra to the interpersonal communication which positively affects accomplishments. It also improves attitude towards the work throughout the day. The humour has much value in improving attitude and mood states, and in turn inter-personal behaviour. There is much humour around us everyday for our appreciation and personal benefit, but if we are in the wrong mood (as when we take ourselves too seriously), we miss these opportunities. As it has been also said
"Don't live your life too seriously so that you can't come out of it alive."
One should also realise the value of adding humour to group presentations. For this, a periodic scan of magazines and newspapers can be done. One can develop humourous sketches to spice up the presentations for university students or safety professionals.
Adding humour to written and oral communication in ways that benefit attention, learning and mood state is easier said than done. We've all had the experience of telling a joke that did not work he way we wanted. It's not enough to have a good humourous story to illustrate a point. The story needs to be told well and at the right time. Audience reactions (or lack thereof) tells us when our humour worked or flopped. Corrective feedback is certainly useful in integrating quality humour with other material. Our sense of humour can also be developed by understanding what makes a story or illustration funny.
The surprise joke works well when you present your audience with a simple story description that stimulates thoughts and imagery. Then you wreck the image by adding surprise to the end. The more you catch the audience off guard, the greater is the laughter.
Sense of humour improves mood at least briefly but generally largely. And when a person is in good mood, he is more apt to actively care for the safety or health of the other person or his environment. This illustrates the power of humour to benefit both attitude and behaviour and to help cultivate a Total Safety Culture.
It's not easy to select and use the right amount of humour at the right time. But the reciprocal payoff of humour for both the giver and the receiver makes the development of a good sense of humour well worth the effort.
